BOSNIA: Eleven current and former Bosnian-Serb policemen have been arrested for alleged involvement in the massacre of Muslims at Srebrenica in July 1995.

They were seized by special forces in Republika Srpska, the Serb-run region of Bosnia, which is under intense international pressure to catch Srebrenica suspects before July 11th, the tenth anniversary of the massacre of 8,000 Muslim men and boys.

"Bosnian Serb police have arrested a certain number of people," confirmed police spokesman Radovan Pejic, of an operation that he said was continuing yesterday in the vicinity of Srebrenica.

Lawyer Dragan Gotovac announced that he was representing two of eleven people who had been seized over their role in Europe's worst slaughter since the second World War .

"My two clients and the other arrested are . . . all suspected of genocide over the takeover of Srebrenica," he said.

The United Nations established a so-called safe haven for Bosnian Muslims at Srebrenica, but vastly outnumbered Dutch peacekeepers were forced to hand it over to the chief of the Bosnian Serb military, Gen Ratko Mladic.

US officials have expressed some confidence that Gen Mladic may soon be captured along with his main political ally, Radovan Karadzic.
