Two policemen who were sacked following violent riots during the G8 summit in northern Italy in July have found jobs in the intelligence service, the Italian interior ministry said today.

Mr Ansoino Andreassi, who was the deputy head of the national police force when the G8 summit took place in Genoa, has been made deputy head of Sisde, the Italian intelligence service.

Mr Arnaldo La Barbera - who led the anti-terrorism force, Ucigos - has been made deputy director of Cesis, the committee that oversees intelligence services.

Mr Andreassi and Mr La Barbera were fired in August along with the the head of Genoa's police force, Mr Francesco Colucci. They are cited in the inquiry begun by the public prosecutor's office into violence that occurred during the G8 summit.

A young activist was shot dead by police and hundreds wounded following clashes with the police and anti-globalisation protesters.

The head of Italy's police force, Mr Gianni De Gennaro, admitted in front of a parliamentary committee mistakes had been made in trying to quell the violence.
