Police have arrested two youths in connection with the murder of a man whose body was discovered in a park in south Belfast last weekend.

The body of Mr Ian Samuel Flanagan (30) was found close to a hockey pitch at Queen's playing fields in the upper Malone area shortly after 8 a.m. on Sunday. The area is frequented by gay men in the city.

Police said the victim had suffered severe head injuries.

A youth was arrested during a planned search in the Newtownbreda area of south Belfast last night. A second teenager was arrested this morning in an undisclosed area of the city.

The police are still trying to establish a motive for the killing.

"We are following a number of lines of inquiry. One involves liaising with members of the gay community," a police spokesman said.

Gay rights campaigners believe Mr Flanagan, who had been living at Donegall Avenue in Belfast, may have been targeted by a gang who thought he was a homosexual.

Detectives said yesterday they were still trying to trace two men dressed in sports clothing seen at Barnett's Park, south Belfast, where Mr Flanagan's BMW car was parked, and close to where his body was discovered at a bottom of a grass bank beside hockey pitches on Sunday morning.

They also appealed for the driver of a grey and black jeep to come forward.
