British fraud police are questioning Wessex Water chief Mr Colin Skellett for a second day today over an alleged £1 million sterling bribe.

The Wessex Water chairman and chief executive was arrested yesterday on suspicion of taking a bribe during the firm's takeover by Malaysian energy company YTL Power but was released overnight with a second suspect.

Police spokeswoman Ms Orna Joseph said the two would face further interrogation.

Police said yesterday they had arrested a senior Wessex Water official suspected of receiving a corrupt payment of nearly £1 million. The company identified the suspect as Mr Skellett.

Mr Skellett is also non-executive chairman of infrastructure services company Jarvis. Shock at his arrest hit sentiment yesterday, when Jarvis shares fell nearly 14 per cent.

Police have declined to identify the second man, except to say he is not directly connected to Wessex Water or YTL Power, which bought the company in May from failed energy trader Enron's Azurix unit.
