The police ombudsman in Northern Ireland today launched an inquiry after a man was shot by an officer responding to an emergency call-out in Northern Ireland.

The man suffered a bullet wound to the leg during the shooting incident at the Ballysally housing estate in Coleraine, Co. Londonderry last night.

His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

A police spokesman said: "Following reports by residents of an armed man in the Ballysally Estate in Coleraine, police responded and one person was injured.

"The chief constable has referred the incident to the police ombudsman who is carrying out an investigation into the discharge of a firearm by police which resulted in injury to a member of the public."
