More than 70 per cent of tickets for the first Paul McCartney concert in Dublin in 40 years were snapped up on the first day of sales yesterday, reports Alison Leslie.

The general manager of Ticketmaster, Mr Eamon O'Connor, described the demand for tickets for the RDS concert on May 27th as "phenomenal". Money seemed no object for Sir Paul's "Back in the World" show, with tickets ranging in price from €75 for general admission to €105 for seats.

Sir Paul has not played in Ireland since he was a member of The Beatles, when they played their only show at Dublin's Adelphi Cinema in November 1963.

The RDS show will include 22 Beatles songs, twice as many as the Beatles performed in 1963, and hits from Wings. The show will play throughout Europe in March, April and May.
