THE ACTRESS Dorothy Lamour, best known for her role in the series of Road movies starring Bob Hope and Bing Crosby, has died. She was aged 81.

She made her film debut in Jingle Princess in 1936, but her big break came in The Road to Singapore in 1940. Apart from her Road movie roles, her Hollywood career was relatively shortlived.

Esther Rantzen has expressed fears about her future with the BBC in a confidential memorandum to director general John Birt. She said Panorama reporter John Ware, who wrote an attack on her in the Sunday Telegraph, "has put my whole television career in jeopardy".

The Finnish speaker of parliament has written an explicit book about her sex life. Finns are queuing to buy Fluttering Flame, by Riitta Uosukainen (54), a former education minister who ranks second only to President Martti Ahtisaari.
