Magistrates in North Avon, near Bristol, set no date for the trial.

The singer was arrested last year as he returned from a holiday in Cuba after police allegedly found pornographic pictures in his possession. Glitter (above) was charged with possessing indecent photographs of children. He is also charged with assaulting girls under the age of 16 and four other serious sexual offences.

Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, has sold some 18 million records.

Zimbabwe's former president, Canaan Banana, was found guilty of sodomy yesterday, but the 62-year-old cleric was reported to have fled the country.

High Court Judge Godfrey Chidyausiku issued a warrant for his arrest after the state prosecutor said Banana was seeking political asylum in neighbouring Botswana.

Banana, who pleaded not guilty to all the charges, had denied in court that he ever sodomised or tried to sexually attack his aides-de-camp, guards and other men. Banana is a poet and also author of a number of books on Christianity, including Woman of My Imagination - a guide on youth upbringing.

Sean Connery, known as much for his suave portrayals of James Bond as his fiery defence of Scottish nationalism, will play the role of Saladin, the Muslim who led the 12th century fight against the Crusaders in Jerusalem, in an upcoming feature film. Syrian-American director, Musatafa al-Aqqad, said yesterday. The film will have a budget of around $100 million.
