British Labour peer Baroness Young of Old Scone was yesterday confirmed as the new BBC governors' vice-chairman. Lady Young, who was raised to the peerage last year and is a former chief executive of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, will start a four-year period of office on August 1st.

Veteran British actor Michael Denison who, with Dulcie Gray, formed one of the most famous and long-lasting husband-and-wife show business partnerships, died yesterday aged 82.
