Balloonist Brian Jones (51) yesterday described how he and his co-pilot shared every possible emotion during their momentous journey around the world.

He thanked his companion, Bertrand Piccard, as well as the Breitling support team which helped them win the last great prize in aviation.

Piccard said he and Jones were dedicating their success to children, to show that realising dreams was indeed possible.

"The flight is the triumph of a dream but it is also a triumph of perseverance and endurance, because to get that success we had to endure many failures.

Former US president Jimmy Carter (74) stepped into a former communist rebel sanctuary in the Philippines yesterday, armed with trowel and hacksaw, to help build houses for the country's slumdwellers. In blue jeans and wearing a straw hat to protect against the sun, Carter joined more than 2,000 volunteers building houses of concrete in Maragondon, 60 km south of Manila.
