An elderly pedestrian has been killed after being struck by a car on the M6 near Athlone in Co Westmeath.
The collision happened at approximately 6am as the man was walking in the Monksland area on the route.
Part of the eastbound carriageway of the M6 was closed between junctions 14 and 12 earlier today for a technical examination of the scene. The route has now reopened.
