Rome - The Kurdish rebel leader, Mr Abdullah Ocalan, said in an interview broadcast on television and published in Italy yesterday that he would announce his resignation as leader of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

Mr Ocalan told the Italian communist newspaper, Il Manifesto, that he was planning to step down as part of a restructuring of the party, which is outlawed in Turkey. But he added that he was not yet advocating renunciation of the armed struggle.
