Most of the countries making up the Organisation of American States backed Argentina’s claim to the Falklands Islands today, calling on Britain to begin talks towards a peaceful resolution of the dispute.
Ministers from OAS member states meeting in Cochabamba, Bolivia, read resolutions supporting Argentina.
Argentine foreign minister Hector Timerman said his government has extended its hand to Britain to “start a dialogue and resolve this colonial conflict”.
But Canada echoed Britain’s position on the Falklands - that the islands’ residents had the right to decide their own future. The US took no position.
Both Argentina and Britain claim the islands, which are known as the Malvinas in Latin America. The two countries fought a war over them in 1982.
