The Minister for Defence Willie O'Dea has apologised to the family of Donegal soldier Pte Kevin Barrett (left) for the way they have been treated in the years since his death in Lebanon in 1999.

He has promised a fresh, independent investigation.

The family were originally told he had died as a result of an accident but after a long campaign, a public inquest was held and an open verdict was recorded.

Pte Barrett died in February 1999 in a shooting incident while serving in Lebanon. He was fatally wounded by his own gun.
