Northern Ireland's hopes of playing Wales in a friendly next February have been dashed.

Manager Sammy McIlroy was looking to fix the warm-up match ahead of their Euro 2004 qualifiers against Armenia and Greece in March.

Instead he will be looking elsewhere in a bid to give his squad some much needed match practice.

The Irish have picked up one point from their opening two games, drawing with Ukraine after losing to Spain.

McIlroy said: "We were hoping to play Wales but have been told they have made other arrangements. I am still looking for a match in February and we could know more next week".
