The North's Community Relations Council has defended its work after it was described as "hopeless" by a leading SDLP member, Dr Brian Feeney. The council was set up by the British government six years ago to promote better community relations.

Writing in yesterday's Irish News, Dr Feeney claimed the council was "in denial" on the true nature of sectarianism. "If this year has not shown beyond any doubt that the CRC has accomplished precisely zero with the millions pumped into it, what does it take?"

The council's director, Dr Mari Fitzduff, insisted it had an important role to play in Northern Ireland.
