THERE WAS a heavy Garda presence in Killarney for the Ordnance Survey of Ireland-sponsored motor rally attended by an estimated 50,000 people, including large numbers of young people in “souped-up” cars.
Gardaí yesterday said there had been no serious incidents, but confirmed there had been 27 arrests up to 6am on Sunday morning, including 13 arrests for public order offences. Other arrests were for drunk-driving and drug searches.
There were also a number of drug detections at a rave event attended by 2,000 people, said Sgt Ray Walsh.
He said most car parks in the town and its vicinity were either closed off by gardaí and private security or were heavily policed.
He added that the event, while just as large, had been more manageable than other years from a Garda point of view.
