THE lack of a clear cut motive makes the murder of John Cusack one of the most perplexing crimes of its kind, according to Det Insp John Kerin of Limerick.
Together with Supt Michael O'Keeffe and Det Insp Eamon McKeon, Det Insp Kerin headed up the murder hunt after the killing. About 50 gardai worked on the case initially, "in one of the most intensive inquiries ever carried out. And a team is still in place following up a number of leads".
He added. "It has us flabbergasted, for we got a lot of information from the public at the time and last week a number of further important matters came to light." Most of the Garda inquiries have focused on people with whom Mr Cusack had business.
He said the gardai had interviewed people on both sides of the Border. "The murder is not forgotten, and I would appeal to anybody who might be able to help to come forward and the information will be treated in strict confidence."
Two men were released without charge after being held in Limerick last February under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act. They were questioned about firearms relating to the murder.
