NISSAN IS recalling 51,000 cars globally over fears the steering wheel may become loose.
The recall, which involves 1,145 cars in Ireland, concerns Qashqai and Qashqai+2 family cars built in 2012.
It relates to a potential fault with the steering wheel “boss” unit in a small number of vehicles, which could, in extreme circumstances, result in the wheel becoming loose.
The Japanese car firm said it had identified the potential problem during routine testing, and the company had no record of the wheel coming loose on cars owned by customers.
Earlier this month Finnish national broadcaster YLE reported that the steering wheel of a Qashqai+2 in Finland became loose.
Nissan said that where necessary steering wheels would be replaced, and that the company estimated that 600 vehicles globally might need attention.
A spokeswoman for Nissan Ireland said the recall was being carried out voluntarily by the company and the customers involved would be notified in the coming weeks. Inspections would take approximately 15 minutes at authorised Nissan dealerships.
The Qashqai is the third best-selling car in Ireland this year with 3,170 new registrations. However, many of these cars would have rolled off the production line last year.
