A new political movement appealing to disaffected unionists will be launched later today launched by former Democratic Unionist MEP Jim Allister.

It will be known as the 'Traditional Unionist Voice'. With branches in 12 of the 18 Westminster constituencies, Mr Allister said he had recruited councillors across the six counties.

Mr Allister said: "The Traditional Unionist Voice will occupy the traditional unionist ground so wantonly abandoned by others for the sake of office".

"Tens of thousands of unionists feel sickened and deflated by the spectacle of IRA/Sinn Fein at the heart of our government, having been put there by those they trusted in the past....To them I say, you are not alone, ours is an honourable and legitimate view and together we can make it count."

Mr Allister resigned from the DUP last spring after First Minister Mr Paisley announced he would go into government once a financial package was secure.

The DUP fought fresh Assembly elections on the basis and became the largest party. However, a number of councillors from Mr Paisley's constituency of Ballymena, Co Antrim, and elsewhere resigned after the decision to enter government.

Mr Allister added his followers were committed to the union with Britain, wanted the rule of law to prevail in every part of Northern Ireland and supported traditional family values.

There are no immediate plans to fight elections but he isn't ruling out the possibility in the future.

Supporting his dissident group are the former MP William Ross and Orange Order Grand Chaplain, the Rev Stephen Dickinson.

Mr Dickinson said: "Many within the Christian community and the Orange family have been disgusted with the delivery of IRA/Sinn Féin into government.

"Many feel totally betrayed by the DUP's U-turn on fundamental issues and the ease with which they can work so happily together with self-confessed IRA men and convicted terrorists."
