Ankara - The Turkish Prime Minister, Mr Mesut Yilmaz, said yesterday he favoured elections in the second half of 1998, several months later than a previous prediction.

"I think the most appropriate time in that year would be the autumn. If the pressure is on, it could be the spring," Mr Yilmaz said. He came to office in June leading a coalition designed to keep the former ruling Islamists from power.
