The president of the Irish Council of Churches, Canon Ian Ellis (49), is to be the next editor of the Church of Ireland Gazette, writes Patsy McGarry. He will succeed Canon Cecil Cooper, who retires in September after almost three decades with the paper.
Canon Ellis is rector of Newcastle, Co Down, and an experienced writer, journalist, broadcaster and biblical scholar. He attended Portora Royal School in Enniskillen, Queen's University Belfast and Trinity College Dublin. Last year he was elected president of the Irish Council of Churches, a post he will hold until March 2002.
