One of the two men shot on the outskirts of a Derry housing estate on Tuesday night is a nephew of Northern Ireland’s Deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness.
Ruairí Canning was shot once in the leg at High Park in the Creggan Estate which overlooks the river Foyle in the west of the city. A second man was also shot once in the leg in the same incident.
Both have been treated for their injuries.
The Sinn Féin Assembly member for Foyle Martina Anderson said those responsible for the double shooting were out of touch with the feelings of the people of the city.
“The people of Derry support the peace process and the people who did this are out of touch with the mood and the views of the vast majority of people here,” she said.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland have appealed for information about the shootings, which were also condemned by the SDLP.
