Nepal has claimed its forces killed abouts 90 Maoist rebels in a counter-attack after a military camp in the west of the country was raided overnight.

A source said Nepalese forces might have suffered some casualties in the battle in Khara, 600 kilometres west of the capital Kathmandu.

Yesterday, the government extended a state of emergency giving security forces sweeping powers to fight the rebellion, in which more than 4,000 people have been killed since it began in 1996.

The Maoists are battling to install a communist republic in the Himalayan country.
