Modern Irish history writer dies, aged 46

The death has taken place of historian and writer on modern Irish history Peter Hart (46).

Mr Hart, who was from Canada, completed his PhD at Trinity College Dublin, where his thesis work on the IRA became the basis of his first book, The IRA and its Enemies: Violence and Community in Cork, 1916-1923.

He went on to lecture in history at Queen's University Belfast and later took up the role of chair of Irish Studies at Memorial University, Newfoundland. He also wrote reviews for the books pages of The Irish Times.
