Belgrade - President Slobodan Milosevic has been selected as the presidential candidate for his Socialist Party for the September 24th elections, the party said yesterday in a statement. "The main board of the Socialist Party (SPS) set the candidacy of President Slobodan Milosevic to be [new] President of Federal Republic of Yugoslavia," the statement said.

The neo-communist Yugoslav Left (JUL) party, led by Mr Milosevic's wife, Ms Mira Markovic, also designated him as its presidential candidate. The election will be the first test of support for Mr Milosevic and his party since the NATO bombing campaign against Yugoslavia last year.

Opposition party leaders were to meet today to discuss a possible joint presidential candidate.
