Gardai in Limerick began a murder investigation last night after the State Pathologist, Dr John Harbison, confirmed that a man who died from head injuries on Monday was the victim of foul play, reports Eibhir Mulqueen, Midwest Correspondent.

The post mortem was carried out at Cork University Hospital following the death of Mr Anthony O'Donoghue (26) there on Monday. He had been transferred to the hospital's neurosurgical unit from the Mid-West Regional Hospital a fortnight ago in a concussed state and never regained consciousness.

Supt Tony Kennelly, of Henry Street Garda station, said the post-mortem result showed he had a fractured skull "consistent with being assaulted"["].

Mr O'Donoghue, who had been drinking, was found in a collapsed state by gardai outside Cherrydale Court on the Dublin Road at 10.20 p.m. on February 19th. Supt Kennelly appealed for any witnesses to the assault to come forward.
