A post mortem is due to be carried out this morning on the body of an adult male who was shot dead in north Dublin late last night
The shooting took place shortly before 10 p.m. on the street, at the junction between Shanliss Road and Old Town Road, Santry.
Garda∅ at the scene, which was preserved for technical examination, said the dead man was believed to be middle-aged and had been shot a number of times.
The identity or address of the dead man had not been established last night. "We are still interpreting the scene," a garda at the site told The Irish Times, adding that they had "no initial idea of the circumstances of the shooting".
There was no evidence early today to suggest the shooting was gang related, but this may be a "reasonable assumption", said garda∅. A domestic incident, however, was not immediately ruled out.
A spokesman said: "There is nothing yet to suggest the type of gun involved". He could not confirm whether a vehicle was involved in the incident.
Senior garda∅ were involved in a meeting last night at Ballymun Station to discuss the shooting.
Garda∅ were called to the scene, which is in a residential area, after Dublin Fire Brigade received a call reporting the shooting. The man was dead when garda∅ arrived, said a Garda spokesman.
Members of the Garda Technical Bureau were examining the scene last night. The Deputy State Pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy, is due to carry out a post mortem.
A large area around the crime scene was cordoned off by garda∅ early this morning, and garda checkpoints were in place on Shanliss Road.
