A MAN who used his cousin’s apartment to cut and bag almost €300,000 worth of heroin has been jailed for five years at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Garrett Hanley (25) used Wendy Hanley’s apartment in Smithfield village to prepare the drugs for sale.

Wendy Hanley (24) was placed under a probation bond for 12 months last May after she pleaded guilty to allowing her home to be used. Neither of the Hanleys have previous convictions.

Garrett Hanley, Oliver Bond House, Dublin 8, pleaded guilty to possession of the drugs for sale or supply on August 3, 2010.

Garda Seán O’Neill told Mr Remy Farrell, prosecuting, gardaí received confidential information that the apartment was being used for the preparation of drugs.

He said both Hanley and his cousin must have been alerted to the imminent arrival of the gardaí as they had made attempts to leave the premises.

Garrett Hanley was arrested in the atrium of the apartment building and taken to the local station to be searched.

A rucksack he was carrying at time was later found to contain €292,707 worth of heroin and a second small amount was found on his person.

Wendy Hanley was also arrested that day.

Garda O’Neill said Garrett Hanley admitted to bringing the drugs to the apartment to cut and bag. He said he was due to bring them to another person whom he refused to name.

He said he was to be paid €1,000 for his role and claimed it had been his idea to use Wendy’s home.
