An 18-year-old man has been arrested after a 23-year-old man was stabbed in Waterford city in the early hours of this morning.

The victim received wounds to his neck, face and back in the incident, which took place shortly after 4am on Johns Street, and was taken to Waterford Regional Hospital.

The 18-year-old was arrested a short time later close by at Jenkins Lane car park.

He is presently detained under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at Waterford Garda Station.

Gardaí are appealing to witnesses who were in Johns Street or in Jenkins Lane car park around 4am this morning or anyone with any information to offer to contact them at Waterford on 051 305300, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
