Man arrested as two-year-old dies in Meath crash

A lorry driver has been arrested after a crash in Co Meath which resulted in the death of a two-year-old boy.

The boy's parents are reported to be in a critical condition at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, Co Louth.

Four other people were also injured after the crash between a lorry and three cars at Slane Bridge in Co Meath. There injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

A Garda spokesman said the man is being detained in Navan Garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

The child and his mother were in one of the cars and the father was in a vehicle behind them. They were in a queue waiting at traffic lights at the bottom of the hill at the time of the collision.

The driver being questioned is from Portrush, Co Antrim.
