Senior loyalist figures Andre and Ihab Shoukri have been thrown out of the Ulster Defence Association, according to a statement released by the paramilitary organisation today.

The brothers, who are believed to have commanded the UDA's North Belfast unit, were ejected out along with a third member, Alan McClean.

In a statement the grouping said: "We, the ruling body of the above named association, have, following a protracted period of negotiation and investigation, decided to expel a few individual members from our association in North Belfast."

Ihab Shoukri walked free from court earlier this month after a judge threw out charges that he was a member of two paramilitary groups.

Judge Thomas Burgess said the charges of Ulster Defence Association and Ulster Freedom Fighters membership related to a snapshot in time that was now historic.

It had been alleged that Shoukri, of Westland Drive, north Belfast, was a member of the UDA and UFF between February and July 2003.

He had also faced two further charges of professing to be a member of both paramilitary organisations between May 14th and May 20th, 2003.

All the charges were brought under the Terrorism act 2000.

Prosecution lawyers said they had no plans to appeal the judge's ruling.
