A 17-year-old Limerick youth was further remanded yesterday arising out of a serious assault in the city.

Before Limerick District Court was William Moran jnr, of Clare Street, Limerick, who is charged with assaulting Mr Jonathan Edwards (22), of Abbeyvale, Corbally, causing him serious harm at St Ita's Street, St Mary's Park, on August 28th.

The State has alleged the accused struck the injured man over the head with a heavy metal implement.

Insp John Murphy told the court that more serious charges were expected, as the injured man had since died. The accused was remanded in custody to St Patrick's Institution to September 20th. An application by defending solicitor, Mr Ted McCarthy, to have him remanded to Limerick prison was refused.
