Leading US indicator rises in May

The US National Association of Purchasing Management said its headline non-manufacturing business index rose to 52

The US National Association of Purchasing Management said its headline non-manufacturing business index rose to 52.1 in June from 46.6 in May, indicating increased activity in the non-manufacturing economy.

The rise was higher than expected. Wall Street economists had forecast the NAPM survey of non-manufacturing business activity to rise to 46.9 in June.

"New Orders increased and order backlogs shrank more slowly in June than in May. Exports decreased more slowly in June, and the Imports Index remained below 50 for the fifth month," said Mr Ralph Kauffman, chairman of the survey.
