Labour Party leader's mother buried

The funeral took place yesterday of Celia "Sadie" Keane, mother of the leader of the Labour Party, Eamon Gilmore.

The funeral took place yesterday of Celia "Sadie" Keane, mother of the leader of the Labour Party, Eamon Gilmore.

Hundreds of mourners, including representatives of all the main political parties, attended the funeral at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes in Caltra, Co Galway.

Mr Gilmore, said his mother was a woman of strength who had to deal with the death of his father John in 1956, which left her to run the farm and raise the family. Mrs Keane had later remarried and spent 34 very happy years with her second husband, Tommy Keane. She survived by her sons Eamon and John and five grandchildren.

Included among the mourners were former Labour Party leader, Pat Rabbitte, and his wife, Derry; the Mayor of Galway, Tom Costello; and the Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, Denis O'Callaghan. The Taoiseach was represented by Capt Mick Treacy.
