Kilkeel parade passes quietly despite tension

A low-key security presence marked the parade in Kilkeel, Co Down. The town, which has seen recent attacks on Catholic-owned pubs and shops, hosted 15 lodges from throughout the Mourne area. The number of marchers remained high but the bad weather ensured a lower turnout of onlookers.

A British army presence was maintained at the junction of the nationalist Scrogg Road on the way into the village as several small feeder parades marched to meet the main Orange demonstration in the centre of Kilkeel.

No trouble occurred at the parade although the town remained tense after a week of loyalist disturbances in south Down linked with the Orange Order's standoff in Drumcree.
