Nearly 30 jobs could be lost in Mayo from two small companies in the county.

A Gaeltacht knitwear company is to cease production with the loss of 15 jobs. Production will cease at Gaeltarra Knitwear in Tourmakeady from next week. About eight sales and administration jobs will be saved, according to a SIPTU spokesman.

Gaeltarra has been operating in Tourmakeady for more than 30 years. Lower production costs, however, means that the company is transferring its manufacturing facility to Africa, according to Mr Tommy Ginley, of the Mayo SIPTU branch.

"We tried our best to save the plant," Mr Ginley said. "The factory will close on October 30th but sales and administration personnel will be kept on."
