A MAN who accepted his failure to give evidence in a murder trial caused it to collapse has been jailed for a year for perjury and for making a statement with intent to pervert the course of justice.

Thomas Morey, Gerald Griffin Street, Cork, made a statement during the inquiry into the murder of John Butler (20) in Cork on October 7th, 2002. Morey was due to give prosecution evidence in the trial of two men for the murder at the Central Criminal Court in Dublin in February 2006, but when he entered the witness box, he said he had no evidence to give.

Judge Seán Ó Donnabháin at Cork Circuit Criminal Court yesterday jailed Morey for two years, but suspended the final 12 months.
