A three-month jail term was imposed on an asylum-seeker, Abeldelkader Kalia (25), at Ennis District Court yesterday after he was convicted of assault and producing a knife in a manner likely to intimidate another person on December 16th. The court was told that Kalia, an Algerian, had one previous conviction under a different name and had served three months in Mountjoy Prison for criminal damage.

Mr Mohamed Benbullah (29), convicted of the same charges, was fined. Mr Benbullah has no previous convictions.

Judge Albert O'Dea said the assault perpetrated on Mr Abdel Kadir Kabayli, an Algerian granted refugee status, of Barrack Street, Ennis, by the two at his home was a serious one where an offensive weapon was used.
