Jerusalem - Israel informed Jordan yesterday that it would be unable this year to provide the quantity of water promised under a 1994 peace accord because of a serious drought, officials said.

Under their peace accord, Israel should provide Jordan with 50 million cubic meters (1.75 billion cubic feet) of water this year. But the Israeli water commissioner, Mr Meir Ben Meir, said that after insufficient rainfall this winter, Israel did not have sufficient supplies to meet its own needs.
