The group of 40 foreigners, including three Irish people, who are trapped in a remote Bolivian valley by protesting cocaine farmers are expected to be freed shortly.

The farmers in Sorata valley, protesting against their government's war on the production of the coca plant, have reportedly prevented tourists from getting through their barricades.

The farmers had blocked the main road through the valley, which the group were due to cross.

The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed to ireland.comthat the Honorary Consulate in Bolivia was "aware of the situation", and was available for inquiries.

A spokeswoman for the British embassy in La Paz said local authorities were confident the blockade will be lifted.

"They have decided to lift the blockade," she said. "We expect the tourists to be back in La Paz later.

It is thought that as many as 40 tourists are trapped, including three Britons, two Germans, two Belgians and six Israelis.

In other areas of Bolivia, at least 12 people, including three soldiers, have been killed in recent clashes between farmers and security forces.
