The Islamic Foundation of Ireland has said the US attacks on Afghanistan are not the right way to go about fighting terrorism.

While condemning all terrorism acts, Imam al-Hussein, the Imam of the Islamic Foundation of Ireland, told ireland.comthat if the US had evidence against suspected terrorists then being a "civilised country it should proceed in a civilised way by trying to capture them or indict them".

He said attacking Afghanistan would only make the situation worse.

Imam al-Hussein cited the example of the indictment of Slobodan Milosovic as a case where going to war against a country was not needed to indict or arrest someone wanted for crimes outside of the country where they live.

He said many Muslims feel there has been a continuing war against Islam in Palestine and Iraq and that may be a motivation for some to get involved with terrorism.

The claims made by US President Mr George W. Bush and the British Prime Minister Mr Tony Blair denying any war against Islam were described by the imam as "empty rhetoric".
