The annual rate of inflation in Ireland fell slightly to 2.6 per cent down from 2.7 per cent in July according to the latest consumer price data out today.
Consumer prices increased by 0.6 per cent in August; this was a fraction lower than the rise in prices last year leading to an annual decrease.
The most notable changes in the basket of consumer goods over the year were increases in energy and fuel (+6.6 per cent ), education (+6.0 per cent ) and transport (+5.6 per cent ).
The price of clothing and footwear has fallen 3.9 per cent in the past 12 months and household furnishings have fallen 2 per cent, according to the survey.
The annual rate of inflation for goods was 1.4 per cent in August while the corresponding rate for services was 3.9 per cent
The EU Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) which measures inflation across the EU also increased by 0.6 per cent in the month.
This was the same as the monthly increase reported for August of last year and as a result, the annual rate of inflation as measured by the HICP remained unchanged at 2.5 per cent.
