The industrial action by 375 former workers at the Irish Glass Bottle plant in Ringsend is continuing despite 14 hours of talks between unions and management at the company last night.

In the talks, it was clarified that approximately €12 million would be paid into a workers' trust fund.

Following the talks, the SIPTU spokesman, Mr Gerry Lynch, said there would be a meeting with all the workers tonight to update them on what had happened at the talks.

He stressed, however, that the workers were determined to continue their fight for a Labour Court recommended redundancy package which would cost the company an estimated €25 million to implement. This package would entitle the workers to five weeks pay per year of employment.

The company has offered approximately two weeks per year of service - plus statutory entitlements.

The plant, which is owned by the Ardagh group, closed on July 5th. The company claimed customer volumes were down 30 per cent on previous agreements. This made the plant non-viable, the company said.

The 24-acre site on which the plant is located is leased from Dublin Port Company, with 64 years still to run on the lease. Hooke & McDonald estate agents have estimated the lease could be worth in the region of €20 million, depending on the restrictions it contains.
