Truckers slated for blowing horns outside Holles Street hospital

The father of a week-old baby has said the truckers’ decision to beep their horns in protest when outside Holles Street maternity hospital shows an “incredible lack of cop on”.

On Wednesday truckers and hauliers demonstrated over fuel prices in Dublin city centre, which caused massive traffic congestion throughout the city.

Oscar Perrson (37), from Dublin, said his wife gave birth to their second daughter girl last week and they were in the hospital when the protest was taking place.

He said the trucks drove by Holles Street twice while beeping horns.

“There were the guts of about 70 trucks going past me, each of them beeping their horn. I just think it shows an incredible lack of cop on when going past the maternity hospital,” he said. “We’ve been battling a lack of sleep all week, as well as many other women in there.”

Verbally abused

Mr Perrson said when he confronted some of the drivers to explain that it was not acceptable to make so much noise outside the hospital, he was verbally abused.

“They have a right to protest, I understand that. But I just think it doesn’t say much about them when they’re doing that outside a maternity hospital,” he said.

“We’re all feeling the pinch in terms of inflation, but there is a way to go about things. This wasn’t it.”

The protest also created problems in terms of access to the hospital, said Mr Perrson.

“They were going around at real speed. If you were going in to collect your newborn, there was no way you were getting in there,” he added.
