Events across country mark Easter Rising’s 100th anniversary

Events will be taking place across the country over the weekend to mark the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising, which took place on April 24th, 1916.

The annual 1916 State Commemoration will take place at Arbour Hill, Dublin, on 10am on Sunday morning where an inter-faith service and ceremony will be held at the graveside of the 14 executed leaders. During the televised event, President Michael D Higgins will lay a wreath on behalf of the people of Ireland.

Special flag raising ceremonies will also take place in Fingal, Longford, Louth, Roscommon and Waterford as well as the opening of a number of new commemorative gardens.

Other events around Dublin include a Women of 1916 exhibition in the Coach House at Dublin Castle. Swords Castle will host a day long event including re-enactments and fireworks.

Elsewhere, a commemoration weekend will take place in Tralee, Co Kerry, including a concert in the square, a fair day and an historical walk from Blennerville.

Limerick City will host a wreath laying ceremony at 11.30am as well as the opening of the memorial gardens at the Civic Offices.

Commemorations in Sligo will include a parade to City Hall for a flag raising and a reading of the Proclamation to be followed by live music. Sligo County Council will host a civic receptionin the Sligo Park Hotel for descendants of the local families involved in the Rising. The day ends with a "fireworks extravaganza" at 9.30pm.

The Mermaid Arts Centre in Bray will on Sunday host "Irish Destiny", a cine-concert presented by the Irish Film Institute with grand piano accompaniment by Micheál Ó Suilleabháin. The silent feature drama was released on Easter Sunday 1926 to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the 1916 Rising.
