Iona Chief Executive Mr Chris Horn briefed staff this morning on restructuring the company and shedding one third of its global workforce.

A company spokesman told ireland.comits Dublin office would be losing 60 people from its 180-strong workforce.

Globally, the company is shedding 218 jobs, leaving a workforce of 400. This means the company is shedding 50 more jobs than it predicted when it announced first quarter results in April.

The spokesman said employees were briefed individually this morning. He added that the decision was taken in order to "move aggressively to a return to profitability as soon as possible."

"Iona still remains a strong, large software company of 400 people. We will be focussing on new and existing products in a leaner more flexible business," he added.

In April, Iona announced losses of $11.7 million for the first quarter and with weaker-than-expected sales of $17 million. It issued a profit warning two weeks before announcing the results which saw its share price fall sharply.
