A young man who was injured when the car in which he was a front-seat passenger overturned after it was rammed several times was awarded €46,000 damages by the High Court yesterday.

Mr Justice Vivion Lavan said Marcus Spratt, the driver of the car that rammed the vehicle in which Victor Neely sustained injuries, was solely responsible for the "outrageous conduct".

Mr Neely, Trentagh, Letterkenny, Co Donegal, suffered a collapsed lung and fractured ribs. Spratt was found guilty of negligence.

Pedestrian killed in Tipperary town

A 71-year-old pedestrian was fatally injured yesterday after being struck by the tractor unit of an articulated truck in Tipperary town.

The pedestrian was removed to Waterford Regional Hospital following the accident which occurred on the main street at around 4.30pm.

Meanwhile, a truck driver who suffered major head injuries following a collision involving two trucks in Co Limerick on Tuesday died of his injuries yesterday in hospital.

The collision occurred on the N24 at Boher, Coherconlish, Co Limerick.

Woman guilty of harassing man

A woman who harassed a man over a long period with letters and phone calls expressing her affection had her sentence adjourned by Judge Michael White at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court yesterday.

Elaine Tyrrell (47), Captains Road, Crumlin, Dublin, pleaded guilty to one count of harassing the victim between January 1st and September 10th, 2004. Her guilty plea came before a scheduled trial on a number of counts. Tyrrell has previous convictions for harassing the same victim who has known her for 20 years and moved home to get away from her.

Det Garda Thomas Gormley said she was jailed for three months in February 2003 for harassing the victim and was given the Probation Act in January 2005 for the same offence. He said Tyrrell has been detained in the Central Mental Hospital since December 2005, losing her bail for breaching a condition that she not contact the victim.

'Shopaholic' stole almost €100,000

A "shopaholic" who defrauded her employer of almost €100,000 had her sentence adjourned at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court yesterday.

Lynn Byrne (24), Killinarden Estate, Tallaght, Dublin, who worked for BWG Foods Ltd, Greenhills Road, Crumlin, pleaded guilty to four charges of dishonesty and theft of cheques. Det Garda Anne Ellis told the court the charges Byrne pleaded guilty to represented sample charges and the total loss to the company was €99,438.

She agreed that Byrne told gardaí she spent most of the money on clothes and a car, and accepted that Byrne could be described as a "shopaholic".

Two years' jail for sex assault

A man who sexually assaulted a student after following her home has been sentenced to two years in prison. Anthony Quinn (26), Coolevin, Ballybrack, Co Dublin, pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting the then 21-year-old in south Dublin on December 31st, 2004.
