An inquiry into allegations of garda corruption in Donegal is likely to go ahead following the completion of a report on files relating to the case.
The Fine Gael justice spokesman, Mr Alan Shatter, tonight said that Mr Shane Murphy SC - appointed by the Minister for Justice Mr O’Donoghue to examine the files - has completed his review of the files and delivered his report to the Minister.
"It is believed that he has recommended to the Minister that a tribunal of inquiry should be appointed to examine these matters and report back to Dáil Eireann," said Mr Shatter.
The inquiry would centre around allegations made by members of the McBrearty family who allege they were harassed by local gardaí.
Five people, including a member of the Garda Síochána, have since been charged.
In order not to prejudice these and other cases an inquiry is expected to be able to hear testimony in private.
"I am calling on the Minister without any further delay to bring a motion before the Dáil and the Seanad setting out the terms of reference of the required tribunal of inquiry and setting out the issues to be examined by it," Mr Shatter said.
He called for Mr Murphy's report to be made public.
