Gardaí in Drogheda have begun an investigation into allegations made by a local Socialist Party councillor that he had been offered a “fee” by a “consultant” to vote a certain way.

At its meeting on Monday night Cllr Frank Gallagher (57) also confirmed to his fellow councillors on Drogheda Borough Council that he had “made a formal complaint” to the Garda Síochána.

Mr Gallagher, who is secretary of the Drogheda Council of Trade Unions, alleges the approach was made after he was elected but before he had formally taken his seat after last June’s local elections.

Garda Supt Gerry Smith, Drogheda, confirmed that “an investigation is taking place into the allegations”.
